Have you noticed something happening around Baguio City lately? It’s not just the fog rolling in. It’s the flea market frenzy! These aren’t your grandma’s dusty yard sales anymore—they’ve transformed into vibrant, buzzing hubs of unique finds, tasty treats, and perfect vibes.
Gone are the days when finding a hidden gem meant braving crowded sidewalks at just a few familiar spots. Now, flea markets—or tiangges—are sprouting up faster than strawberries in season! From weekend pop-ups in charming parks to regular evening events transforming spaces, Baguio leads the way in flea markets. While similar markets are growing in Manila, Davao, Cebu, and beyond, we’ll focus on this city for now.
Why the sudden spike?
It’s simple, really. People in Baguio (and those who visit) are getting smart. They’re realizing that “new” isn’t always “better.” These markets are a treasure chest overflowing with character. You can find everything from vintage clothing that screams “street style champion” to antique furniture pieces with stories to tell. Plus, let’s be real: your wallet definitely breathes a sigh of relief!

A little observation from the group (BV,us), though.
We got overexcited about it. With the rise of flea markets here and there, it’s becoming too dull. I mean, there’s nothing wrong with organizing flea market events monthly or even bi-weekly. Heck, we would visit every single thing if we could. We hope that each event like this would present something odd, new, or even controversial. Baguio’s flea market game is strong, but we believe that we can make it exemplary.
There was a time when we also considered organizing one. Maybe we will, in the future, but for now, we’re sharing these ideas for everyone to munch on…or not.
To Flea Market Organizers and Sellers:
- Themes. Throw a “90s Nostalgia Night” or a “Sustainable Swap Saturday.” Make it an event, not just a market.
- Location, Location, Location. Think beyond the usual spots. Imagine a market with a stunning mountain view or tucked away in a cozy, unexpected corner.
- Ambiance is Everything. Play some fun, chill music. Get some cute fairy lights. Make the space feel instantly Instagrammable and welcoming.
To Shoppers (That’s You!):
- Don’t just wander, hunt! Look closely, ask questions, and be ready to negotiate with a smile. It’s a social event with treasure loots on the side.
- Don’t Be Shy. Try that funky hat! Sample that homemade cookie! Chat with the seller! The best part of the market is the lively, friendly atmosphere.
Flea markets are more than just places to buy your trinkets. They are social events, cultural showcases, and a testament to a space’s unique charm. It offers an alternative to the static mall experience, filling our days with laughter and the sweet smell of a good deal.
Now the question is, are we ready to step up this game?
